What is Pull-up leather?

We got a pull-up leather hide of vegetable-tanned bovine leather from Conceria Virgilio for the folding part of this pack as an experiment for a two-of-a-kind piece. Pull-up leather is wax and oil-rich leather where wax and oil are infused into the leather during the tanning process. This creates leather that is particularly supple and extremely resistant to any cracking. It also has a particularly interesting way it develops over time, as the leather stretches, pulls, or folds over itself, the leather lightens from the pulled areas, developing beautiful creases. This is also called the pull-up effect. You can restore the dark color from pulled areas by rubbing with your hand to heat up the leather, and the pack almost magically turns dark brown again. We expect these packs to develop some remarkably handsome patina over time. 

Conceria Virgilio is from the town of San Miniato in Tuscany, halfway between the cities of Pisa and Florence, in a region especially known for its leather industry. The looks of the pack are as rugged as the pack itself, this one is for life.

About this particular pack

These two pieces made from the rustic and supple pull-up leather from Virgilio and the brown frame from SOHRE make for our second combination that could have been featured in a Sergio Leone western. The first one was the Railroad Rust and Brown. You can almost hear the loping stallions and steam locomotives. Worn by the protagonists of course.

The pack is made exclusively from a dense, strong surface grain of bovine leather that is hard as armor. No wonder this stuff has been used for over a century as protective clothing by racers and motorcyclists. And as body armor since at least the beginning of recorded human history.

The Fold Top is our most popular product and it turns heads wherever we go. As a product that lasts a lifetime, it is an investment that only gets better, more sustainable, and affordable with time. Stylish for city use. Sturdy for forest hiking. Easily big enough for a weekend trip. Compact to carry on as cabin luggage. Its ergonomics are designed to keep it comfortable even after full days of carrying heavier loads. It might just be the last backpack you’ll ever need.

The vegetable-tanned leather’s excellent properties have been taken advantage of in the design. The body of the pack is made from sturdy leather from the German SOHRE tannery which is combined with the L-shaped monocoque-like back structure where the leather itself provides a supportive structure that helps distribute loads as a framed pack would. As the backpack is packed, the additional internal structure of your gear will enhance the structural skins' ability to carry the load. Combined with wide 60mm leather straps that conform to your body over time, this makes for a leather pack that is exceptionally good at carrying even heavier loads for prolonged distances. A detachable computer sleeve is included. The sleeve attaches only at the top to let the bag conform to the shape of your back. It also works as padding when the bag is packed full. The bag has six external attachment points for external gear like camera tripods, fishing rods, or camping gear.

Made from high-quality vegetable-tanned leather. The frame of the bag is made of German SOHRE tannery's sturdy bovine leather and the folding part is made of Italian Virgilio tannery's vegetable-tanned supple yet sturdy pull-up bovine leather.
