Learn Leathercraft the Right Way

At Kasperi, we believe in making things that last. Now, we’re passing that vision on. In collaboration with Tavastia Professional College, we’ve launched a program designed to cultivate the next generation of leatherworkers. This is our commitment to preserving the culture of quality craftsmanship — and an invitation for you to join.

The School of Leathercraft is a hands-on, 30 ECTS credit program that runs over four months. It’s tailored to give you a strong foundation in traditional leatherworking skills — from material understanding to hands-on tool use and workshop practice. Apply now, and you could find yourself learning alongside our team in Hämeenlinna.

Created with Tavastia — one of the few schools in the Nordics offering formal leathercraft and shoemaking education — this program gives you a rare opportunity to develop professional skills in a real workshop setting. After completing the first semester, you’ll also have the opportunity to continue toward a full 180-credit professional degree.

The program takes place from Monday to Wednesday in Hämeenlinna. Classes are held at Tavastia’s fully-equipped workshop facilities, and a portion of your studies will be completed through an apprenticeship at Kasperi — experiencing first-hand how modern leather goods are made with care and purpose.

Please note: Instruction is currently in Finnish. However, if you're truly motivated, we encourage you to apply.

Why Apply?

By the end of the program, you’ll understand what it truly takes to make something that lasts. You’ll gain practical skills, develop a craftsman’s mindset, and build the confidence to continue your path in leatherwork — whether as a professional or a serious hobbyist.

Those with prior experience in sewing or working with leather will progress quickly and deepen their skills. Beginners are welcome and will benefit from ongoing study or practice. Graduates may be invited to continue at Tavastia or work with us, depending on alignment and production needs.

Spots are limited and admission is based on motivation and suitability.

Who Should Apply?

This program is designed for people ready to commit — not only to learning but to practicing. Whether you're switching careers, pursuing a long-held passion, or simply want to understand leatherworking deeply, this program offers a structured and professional starting point.

The School of Leathercraft supports a variety of skill levels. While it’s built as a foundational course, advanced learners will also find value — and we’re ready to tailor your experience.

Please note: Teaching is currently in Finnish, but capable, motivated learners of all backgrounds are welcome. Reach out if you're interested.

What You’ll Learn

The curriculum is built around hands-on learning. Thanks to Finland’s public education system and this public-private partnership, the education is free of charge (except for materials).

Your studies will combine classroom instruction with real workshop apprenticeship. Topics include:

  • Machinery Operation — learning to use professional leatherworking equipment
  • Leather Care — techniques for cleaning, maintaining, and restoring leather
  • Design Drawings — how to read and interpret patterns and plans
  • Prototyping — developing and testing new product ideas
  • Kasperi: Production Workflows — insight into efficient workshop operations
  • Kasperi: Culture of Quality — building an eye for precision and longevity
  • Kasperi: Working in Production — real-world experience making Kasperi bags
  • Kasperi: The Making of a Product — crafting a genuine Kasperi item based on your skill level
